Obituary for William J Meehan

William James Meehan 88 of Leisure Knoll Community in Manchester passed away at home on Tuesday June 8, 2022. He was born and raised in Jersey City and he resided in Union City for 60 years before moving to Manchester in1993. He served in the Army during the Korean War as an Intelligence Specialist from 1953-1955. He earned his BA in Education from Montclair State College and worked for the Herald Tribune Newspaper and then as a Graphic Arts Teacher in North Bergen High School and was elected as President to the North Bergen Teacher’s Union. He served as Mayor of Union City from 1970-1974 and was significant in obtaining the Emergency Ambulance Corp to the city. He owned and managed three apartment buildings and a day care center for 13 years in Union City. William was active in Leisure Knoll as a Board of Trustee for 8 years and President for 2 years, Editor of the Knoll News for 10 years, a Pool Monitor Chairman and an honoree for the Outstanding Leisure Knoll Volunteer Award. He was a member of the Computer Club, Social Club, Organ Club, Health & Fitness Club, Italian American Club, and a charter member of the Veterans Club and their Distinguished Medal of Honor recipient. He was a member of the Leisure Knoll Knights of Columbus Council # 10022 and a parishioner of St John’s Church, Lakehurst. William was an extraordinary and gentle man who will be missed by many. He is predeceased by his wife, Elvira and a nephew, Thomas Stanton. Surviving is his sister, Patricia Stanton, a brother, Arthur Meehan, 11 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews and his beloved companion Fran Lupico of 11 years. Visitation is Monday 4-8 PM at Oliverie Funeral Home 2925 Ridgeway Rd Manchester. Funeral Liturgy is Tuesday 10 AM at St John’s Church, Lakehurst with interment to follow at Brigadier Gen Wm C Doyle NJ Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.
