Mary McGonegal died on May 10, 2022 after suffering from a series of health issues. She was 87 years old. Mary was born in New York City, the daughter of Philip and Alice (O'Connell) McGonegal. Most of her growing up years were spent in Roselle Park, New Jersey, where she was the oldest of the six children in the family. Mary attended St. Joseph's School in Roselle and Benedictine Academy in Elizabeth. Mary studied nursing at the School of Nursing at St. Peter's Hospital in New Brunswick. After receiving her Registered Nurse license, Mary enjoyed a fulfilling career in healthcare. She served in the Air Force Nurse Corps, rising to the role of Captain and receiving an Honorable Discharge. She lived in Denver and Boston before accepting a position with IBM as an Occupational Health Nurse. Mary worked on both coasts during her IBM career which lasted for 32 years. Mary retired to Leisure Village West where she participated in numerous volunteer opportunities and enjoyed the proximity to the Jersey Shore. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother Miriam Howard McGonegal, and her beloved sister Helen. She is survived by her brother Phil and his wife Carol (Jacobus) of Atlanta, her brother Tom and his wife Tish (Doehner) of Acton, Ma.; her sisters Virginia Martin of Skillman, NJ and her sister Alice (Joseph) Ryan, also of Atlanta. A parishioner of St. John's for the years that she lived in Manchester and her funeral Liturgy will be celebrated there on Saturday, June 18 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be private. Mary has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital 501 St Jude Place in Memphis, TN 38105.
