Obituary for Marie V. Gooden

Marie Vicenza (Fonte) Gooden, 91, of Whiting, NJ, died in her sleep, Monday, May 2, 2022, at Hampton Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Toms River.
She was born in Bronx, NY, and the eldest of 6 six children. She resided in Jackson, NJ, from 1965-1983. Mr. & Mrs. Gooden relocated to Manchester and finally to Whiting 26 years ago. She and Bob loved their Whiting home.
Marie worked at retail for many years in the Bronx and then worked at McGraw-Hill Publications for 25 years in the Magazine department before retiring in 1993.
She was very spiritual and devoutly religious. As a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Lakehurst, NJ, she was an altar server, Eucharistic Minister, religious education teacher, a member of the Rosary Altar Society and the St. Vincent de Paul Society and a devout Carmelite. In her later years she found spiritual happiness in further Bible Studies.
Marie had a love of gardening, eventually serving as President of her local Gardening Club. She shared this love with her family and friends; African Violets and roses being among her favorite plants.
She enjoyed travel. She visited from Canada to Maine, Rhode Island to North Carolina, and as far south as Florida. She and Bob enjoyed several long visits to California, as well as a 25th wedding celebration in Hawaii, a lifelong dream realized. She was a beautiful woman, with a warm, friendly, playful nature who has given many happy memories to all who knew her.
Marie is predeceased by her husband and true love, Robert Gooden. Surviving are her son, Robert Gooden, Jr., and wife Fran; 3 daughters and sons in law, Patricia Downey and Vincent, Jo-Ann Rocchino and Frank, and Mary B. Vargas and Max. She leaves behind 2 sisters and brothers in law, Caroline Ambrose and George and Angela Guerra and Nicholas. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, April, Joseph, Nicholas, Christina, Paul, and Grace. And there are 10 great children, Michaela, Donovan, Marilyn, Anson, Ariana, Holden, Titus, Beatrix, Ambrose, and Michael.
Visitation is Thursday, May 12, 2022, 8:30-10:30, with an 11:00 AM Funeral Liturgy at St. John’s Church, Lakehurst. Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Toms River.
