Obituary for Josephine Dorathy Garguilo Newhardt

Josephine Dorathy Garguilo Newhardt, our Centurion Matriarch, passed from this life on April 3rd, 2020, with grace and peace surrounded by her family.

Born and raised on Staten Island, NY, she was the fourth of six children of Luisa Balsamo and Agnello Garguilo. She grew up surrounded by her loving family and friends steeped in rich Italian traditions. She enjoyed ice skating, bocce, skipping rope, cooking, embroidery, picture shows, music, dancing and singing. In her youth and for decades, she was a member of the St. Michael’s Church Choir on Staten Island, often a soloist. Because she loved to sing, she joined church choirs wherever she lived.

She worked for Proctor & Gamble and was an Avon Representative in NY and NJ earning many awards and promotions. In 1963 she moved to Jackson, NJ with her husband and four children.

She had endless talents and passions: a wonderful cook, gardener, storyteller, dancer, singer, royal bluer, and more recently a ‘pocket designer’, made and sewed by hand onto every dress and nightgown she owned a pocket, usually in the shape of a heart, to hold her Rosary beads.

She was a devout Catholic. Because she did not drive, for years she enjoyed walking miles to church for daily mass. A walking meditation she’d say. She was active in a number of charities for the poor. She traveled and organized countless pilgrimages around the world to support missionaries, orphanages and those in need. She even met Mother Theresa. After her husband passed in 1986, she lived in Fatima, Portugal a few months each year over several years.

She taught Catechism at St. Aloysius School ~ how the children adored her! She belonged to many organization including St. Aloysius Church Alter Rosary Society, the Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima, the Legion of Mary and the Living Rosary Apostolate. She became a parishioner in 1994 of St. Mary’s of the Lake, Lakewood, NJ and continued her volunteer work.

Her Mother called her a Butterfly because she was always busy ‘doing’ for others.
Our Matriarch Butterfly indeed!

She lived her beliefs everyday of: Faith, Hope, Charity, Kindness, Love, and ‘Family Togetherness’. Her recipe for a full life. Above all, her treasured joys in life were her faith and being a Wife and Mother.

She is predeceased by her husband Robert Newhardt and her five siblings: Mary, Margaret, Josephine, Louis and Ralph. Surviving are her Four Children: Daughters: Joan & her husband Donald, Rosemary and her partner David, Sons: Robert and his wife Marlies, David and his wife Kathryn. Four Grandchildren: Jennifer, Jessica and her partner Andrea, Robert D., Richard and his wife Heather. Two Great Grandchildren: Thomas and Adrianna. Her Granddawgy’s: Lucca, Penny, Raj, Daisy.
Her Sisters in Law: Jena Garguilo, Arlene Newhardt and many Nieces, Nephews, Godchildren and cherished hearts.

Always with her Goodnight wishes she’d place a kiss in her hand and gently blow it towards you and say: ’Dream of the Angels’ xo

Mom, Grandma, we miss you, we love you, we thank you for the gift of your devoted love & your precious life in ours. Forever a part of who we are. Your legacy of devotion, charity, warmth and love will transcend for generations. Until we embrace again, we know our most glorious eternal light and Angel is YOU! Godspeed our Magnificent Matriarch! We will meet you in our dreams. xo

The Family wishes to extend a special thank you to: Dr. Satyendra Singh,
Friend: Melonne, Caregiver: Kadidia, Meridian Health At Home Hospice and their many Angels, Home Health Aids: Tony, Debbie, Brandywine of TR,
Father Marion of St. Mary’s, NJ and Father Soller of St. Michael’s, NY.
