Obituary for Johanna Gonzalez

Johanna Puma Gonzalez, 81, of Manchester, died Monday, May 29, 2023 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Newark, she resided in Toms River for 37 years, Whiting for 15 years, and recently moved to Manchester in 2022. Johanna was an English teacher with the Edison School District for 11 years, and the Toms River Regional School District for 19 years, at Toms River East High School, before retiring from teaching. She stayed active as a part-time travel agent until 2018. She loved traveling with friends and family and traveled all over the world. She also enjoyed playing mahjong, watching Jeopardy, knitting and crocheting. She was also a member of the Ladies Altar Rosary Society in two local parishes and a Eucharistic minister. Most of all, Johanna loved & adored her grandchildren and cherished the time spent with them. She was predeceased by her husband in 2018, Deacon James Gonzalez, and her brothers Joseph, Anthony and Louis Puma. Johanna is survived by her son, Jason Gonzalez; daughter & son in law, Jessica & David Nelms; and her grandchildren: Alex, Jonas, Savana, Salvatore & William. She also leaves behind thousands of students whose lives she touched during her 30-year career in education, many of whom she stayed actively in touch with until her passing. Memorial Gathering will be Saturday, June 10, 2023 from 3-6pm at Oliverie Funeral Home, 2925 Ridgeway Road, Manchester. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
