Obituary for James V Nola

Nola, James Vincent (Jim), age 90, of New Bern, North Carolina and Staten Island. Jim was born on May 15th, 1932, in Staten Island and graduated from Port Richmond High School where he played on the basketball team. He moved on to enlist in the US Army and then worked at Bayonne Barrel and Drum but found his true calling when he passed the entrance exam for the Fire Department of New York. A natural leader, Jim had an impressive 24 year career with the FDNY. With the support of his wife Barbara, he studied hard and honed his teaching and fire fighting skills to quickly climb the ranks to Battalion Chief, last assigned to the 12 Division. Jim was a devout Catholic and though quite accomplished, he never was one to brag. He was a man of principle and high values and was always grateful that he had a fulfilling career while never missing one game when his sons played ball. He retired from the FDNY and moved on to his next calling when he and his wife Barbara relocated to the Fairfield Harbor Golf Community in New Bern, North Carolina where they enjoyed more than thirty happy years. Jim’s athletic prowess and ability to laser focus transferred to his golf skills-he became an expert golfer, earning many trophies, including five for accomplishing a “hole in one”. Jim and Barbara were proud of their boys and cherished a family photo from Jim’s promotion ceremony to Battalion Chief where he and his sons were all in uniform (Jimmy and Bobby FDNY and David U.S. Navy). He was pre-deceased by his wife of 67 years, Barbara (nee Sterling), his parents, Carmine (Charlie) and Margaret (nee Franzreb) and his brothers Charlie and Ronnie. He is survived by his sons James and wife Maria, Robert and wife Charlene and David and wife Karen, and was affectionately known as “Pop” to his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family will hold a private celebration of Jim’s life and may his memory be eternal.
