Obituary for Eleanor Tevnan

Eleanor Gubick Tevnan, longtime resident of Elizabeth and Toms River, daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary Gubick, passed away at home, Thursday, December 5, 2019, at the age of 92. Upon graduation from Battin High School in 1944, Eleanor worked as a civilian employee of the United States Air Force in California during World War II. At war's end, she returned to the East Coast and held a few positions in New York City including McGraw-Hill Publishing and McFadden Advertising. She married her high school sweetheart and fellow native Elizabethan, Thomas Martin Tevnan, and together celebrated the birth of seven children. While devoting time to her growing family, Eleanor was named president of Elizabeth's Third Ward Democratic Club, volunteered for the United Way Campaign, and directed one-act plays for the CYO. With her children grown, Eleanor returned to the workforce, notably Gallo Wine Sales of NJ, and then as a grants writer for the City of Elizabeth. Later in life, she resumed her love of painting and a few of her oils received awards. But it was home and family that centered Eleanor whose home was open to friends and visitors who were treated to abundant food, music, stories and laughter. She leaves behind six surviving children and their spouses: Diana and Michael Daly, Barbara and Albert Sczweck, Brian and Gail Tevnan, Michael and Diane Tevnan, James and Beverly Tevnan, and Matthew and Jeanne Tevnan. Eleanor was blessed to welcome the arrival of 16 grandchildren: Nicholas Daly, Kate Van Scoy, Mary Gregorio, Sarah Rabbitt, Daniel Sczweck, Matthew Sczweck, Megan Tevnan, Christopher Tevnan, Kelly Wilson, Michael Tevnan, Colleen Adamshick, Ryan Tevnan, Carolyn Chadbourne, Jillian Tevnan, Meghan Tevnan, & Haley Tevnan; and 11 great-grandchildren: Reese Daly, Colin Daly, Quinn Van Scoy, Audrey Gregorio, Eva Gregorio, Cecillia Sczweck, Molly Wilson, Finley Wilson, Brooke Tevnan, Ava Tevnan & Emma Throne. Funeral Liturgy is Tuesday, 9:15am, at St Lukes Church, Toms River. Interment to follow at St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia.
